The pin is made to fit perfectly into place when the beam has been correctly installed, this means the locking pin is also a great guide to make sure your beam is correctly installed.
 
The funny shape is actually for a reason, the pin is designed to fit into the hole that matches up between the frame and the beam. You just need to give it a bit of a wiggle and it will drop into place.
